Casey: I didn’t want to know a thing. We didn’t pre-shop or go look around beforehand. I feel like it’s the biggest surprise of your life, so I didn’t want to know anything.
Devin: I have Casey’s stepmom to thank for a little bit of insight. They went on a girls’ trip, and she kind of secretly let me know what Casey and she had talked about.
I don’t even think she knew what she wanted, and I don’t think I did either. She mentioned one shape, and I kind of ran with that. I thought it made sense for her on her hand and the way it’s shaped.
For Devin, that one detail became the starting point. He wanted an engagement ring that felt unique to Casey and suited her hand, even if he couldn’t yet picture exactly what the finished design would look like.
Devin: I heard about Elliott through another friend of mine who I trust. We’ve known each other for probably five years, and he sent me Elliott’s way. It was always in the back of my mind, and about two weeks before I asked her, I went and met with him.
Devin: When you’re setting up an appointment with Elliott, you tell them what you’re looking for. As soon as we got there for the appointment, they took me right over to the case with those specific designs and shapes of diamonds. It was very streamlined.
Elliott’s son, John Michael, helped out a lot, too. He was actually the first person I met when I walked in. They were great.
I found the one that I was going to go with, and then the setting was something we talked about. I knew I was going to come back after I asked Casey to get it resized or make any modifications she wanted.
I went with platinum for the band, and I also wanted it to be set higher off the finger because I thought it looked even better that way. They did exactly what I was thinking without me really explaining it in full detail. Elliott just knew what I wanted and kind of ran with the idea.
The couple also reviewed the natural diamond’s specifications, where it came from, and its GIA report before Devin made his decision. The timing was tight, but we made it happen. Devin met with Elliott on a Monday, and a week and a half later, the ring was finished.
For Devin, one of the biggest differences was having Elliott’s full attention throughout such an important decision.
Devin: It was my first time working with a private jeweler like Elliott. It just didn’t feel like he was pushing any sort of thing on me. It was more relaxed and laid-back. We got to talk, get to know each other, and I felt like they got to know Casey without even meeting her. It was very personable.
Even when we went in to get the ring sized after we got back, it felt really personal. We had to make an appointment, and we were the only people in there. It just felt better than walking into a big store with all these people and being another customer.
I also feel like having someone where you can make an appointment and go in and be the only one they’re focusing on is a big deal, especially because you want help and guidance.
That continued one-on-one attention was especially meaningful when Casey returned for her ring sizing. She was preparing to visit family and hoped to have the ring back quickly. Elliott was able to complete the sizing efficiently so she could take it with her and share the engagement with her family.
Casey: I was just like, “Oh my gosh.” I never would have picked this for myself, ever. I really had no idea what I wanted, but it couldn’t have been more perfect and more me.
I could have looked at a million and I would have been like, “I don’t know.” So, it was really special that Devin picked out something so good. I didn’t even know I wanted this myself.
For Casey, the surprise was part of what made the engagement ring so meaningful. Devin had chosen it with her in mind, trusting his instincts and Elliott’s guidance rather than knowing exactly what she would choose for herself.
Casey: Definitely Devin picking it out. I feel like it’s very unique. The experience at Elliott’s wasn’t like going into a big-box jeweler. It was very personalized based on what Devin wanted, which makes it even more special. (I guess that’s the whole point of going to a custom jeweler!)
The engagement ring was only part of the surprise. Devin and Casey both love the beach, so he knew he wanted to propose somewhere that felt connected to them.
Devin: We were in San Diego. We were supposed to go to Coronado Beach, but there was a NASCAR race going on that day, so it was crowded and loud. Instead of going there for Plan A, we went with Plan C.
We went to La Jolla and walked down the beach. I was kind of dropping breadcrumbs, saying, “This is really nice. We should come back here,” while sending pictures to our photographer of possible locations to meet up.
The next day, we went back to the hotel and were hanging out. Then all of a sudden, it was, “All right, the Uber’s going to be here.” That was the hardest part because we were trying to act normal, and I’m not very good at that. Casey was asking a million questions: “What are we doing? Where are we going? Why are you changing? Why are we going here?”
The surprise took a team effort. Their photographer helped Devin plan the location, the hotel staff was in on it, and even the ring box I carefully chose to coordinate with what Casey was wearing.
It was all supposed to be a surprise, and it was. Casey had no idea.
Casey: I really knew nothing throughout this whole process. I didn’t want to know anything. I didn’t want to go shopping, I didn’t want to pick out my ring, and I didn’t want to give him any ideas. I feel like it’s the biggest surprise of your life, so I didn’t want to know anything.
It was really great seeing how much thought he put into it — all the appointments that he told me he went to and all the back and forth. I just know how much Elliott helped him. It was really special all around.
That sentiment captures what makes this engagement ring especially meaningful. Devin wanted something that felt like Casey, Elliott helped him turn that instinct into a finished design, and the final ring became part of a proposal she never saw coming.

Devin: We’re going to go with Elliott again for sure. Since it’s not a symmetrical pear-shaped diamond, the idea is to have something unique that works with it and even further exposes every angle of the diamond. Something on one side and then open-ended for the tip of the pear shape, but it all flows together.
For Casey, the experience was also meaningful because it connected their engagement to the place they call home.
Casey: I love small-town businesses and promoting smaller businesses in our local community. I really love the idea that it wasn’t a big-box store that anybody could go to. It was very personalized and felt like we were supporting our hometown and community.
